The Pluses And Minuses Of Blackjack Switch

Casino games need to evolve in order to keep customer interest alive. While doing so care has to be taken to ensure a balance between the players’ interests and the casinos’ interests. Blackjack switch is one variant of the game that has been able to do just that.

The rules under which blackjack switch is played vary from casino to casino. However the essence of the game is as follows. The players place two wagers of equal size and are dealt two pairs of cards face up. The dealer is then dealt his face up card and hole card. The dealer checks for blackjack if his face up card is an ace. If the dealer has a blackjack then all player hands other than blackjack immediately lose, while player blackjacks push.

Then the blackjack switch comes into play. The player can switch the second card of each hand. For example suppose a player is dealt first a five and then a ten in one hand and first a jack and then a four in the other hand. The hands have values of 15 and 14 respectively, which are not that good. The player can switch the ten of the first hand with the four in the second hand. This gives the player a hand value of 9 in the first hand and a hand value of 20 in the second hand, putting him in an excellent position. After the switch the game proceeds normally with splitting and doubling and all other facets of normal blackjack. An important point to note is that only the second cards can be switched. A player cannot switch the first cards of one hand with the second card of the other hand. Hence the order in which the cards are dealt are important.

It is easy to realize the massive advantage the player gets because of the switch. So where does he pay? The blackjack switch rules deal two very potent blows for the dealer. Player blackjacks pay at only even money instead of the normal 3 to 2. More importantly, the dealer does not bust at a hand value of 22. He busts only on a hand value of 23 and more. A dealer total of 22 is a push against any player total of 21 or less.

Therefore the playing field has been leveled and the battle promises excitement.
